Former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley is in a tough spot in the division. He’s lost twice to the champion, Merab Dvalishvili, but is ranked as the top contender in the weight class.
With no clear path back to a title fight, O’Malley has to string together wins against fellow contenders. He’s willing to get started on that later this year.
“I don’t have too many ideas. I’m going to talk to the UFC … I’m going to go talk with the UFC and hopefully get something out there,” O’Malley told TMZ Sports.
“I wouldn’t mind fighting one more time this year, November, December. In November, they obviously do UFC MSG (Madison Square Garden). In December, they typically do Vegas,” O’Malley continued. “One of those sounds good, and if it doesn’t work out, next year I’m ready to go.”
Having lost to the champion twice, some believed O’Malley may change weight classes. He shot down any talk of changing divisions anytime soon, but expects to eventually move up to the 145-pound weight class.
“I’m good. Bantamweight, I’m still here. There’s still big fights for me to. have at bantamweight,” O’Malley said. “45, will it happen win the future? Yeah, probably, most likely, but we’ve still got work to do down here at 135.”
