Knicks’ Robinson active for Game 1 of NBA Finals vs. Spurs

The New York Knicks will have everyone available for the opening game of the NBA Finals.

Centre Mitchell Robinson is active for Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced prior to tip-off on Wednesday.

Robinson’s status for Game 1 was up in the air after it was reported that he suffered a broken pinky. Knicks head coach Mike Brown said that the injury did not happen during practice or a game, but there were no specifics provided beyond that.

Robinson, 28, averaged 19.6 minutes, 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks over 60 games with the Knicks this season. His 4.2 offensive rebounds per game and 72.3-per-cent shooting percentage from the field were both top-five marks in the league.

However, Robinson has been less of a factor in the playoffs, averaging 5.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in 14.2 minutes.

But the Knicks will need big guys on the floor in this series for one obvious reason — the seven-foot-four challenge that is Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who tends to attract waves of defenders.

The Knicks haven’t won an NBA championship since 1973 and are back in the Finals for the first time since 1999 when they lost to the Spurs.
