The Los Angeles Lakers are not able to sign a 15th player to the roster until January 18 due to being hard-capped at the first apron.
The Lakers used their non-taxpayer midlevel exception to sign Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia this offseason.
Rob Pelinka stated during last week’s press conference to announce Luka Doncic’s extension that he plans to be aggressive with upgrading the roster.
“We like the upgrades we were able to make to the roster,” Pelinka said. “But by no means are we going to be satisfied. I think every year we’re on an infinite cycle to try to improve this team and win championships, and we’ll stay committed to that work.”
The Lakers also have several trade restrictions to work around. LeBron James has a no-trade clause, with Ayton, LaRavia, Jaxson Hayes, and Marcus Smart not being eligible for a trade until December 15.
Rui Hachimura, Maxi Kleber, and Gabe Vincent are also on expiring contracts that combine for $40 million.
