Report: De’Aaron Fox agrees to four-year, $229M extension with Spurs

Point guard De’Aaron Fox agreed to a four-year, $229 million max extension to stay with the team that traded for him, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday.

According to Charania, the deal will run through the 2029-30 season and does not include a player option.

Fox was the centrepiece of a blockbuster three-team deal ahead of the trade deadline last season. The Sacramento Kings netted Zach LaVine as part of the return, with the Chicago Bulls bring back a bevy of players and picks.

The 27-year-old Fox expressed a desire to join the Spurs last season to suit up alongside French superstar Victor Wembanyama. However, injuries cut both their seasons short.

In his limited stint with the Spurs last year, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 17 games. Over his full season, he averaged 23.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals in 62 games.

He played his final game of the season on March 12 before undergoing season-ending surgery on March 18 to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie — an issue that had been bothering him all season long, according to Charania.

A one-time all-star, Fox had spent the entirety of his eight-year career with the Kings before the tarde. He was drafted by Sacramento fifth overall in 2017 out of Kentucky.

Fox and Wembanyama only played five games together as the latter sat out the remainder of the season when he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.

Despite the push to buy at the deadline, the Spurs finished with a 34-48 record and missed the post-season.

Fox was set to hit unrestricted free agency after the 2025-26 season. Instead, the Spurs have the majority of their young core locked up for the next two seasons at least.

Along with Fox and Wembanyama, they grabbed touted guard Dylan Harper second overall at the draft in June, reigning rookie of the year Stephon Castle has three years of team control and swing-man Devin Vassell is under contract through the 2028-29 season.
