It’s early in the season and the field conditions are damp and cool. It’s a bunt situation and everyone knows it. Before stepping on the mound, the pitcher reminds himself that he will need to get off the mound quickly, get under control and chop his steps, and widen his base as he approaches the ball to ensure he doesn’t slip. He is right in his approach to come off the mound hard, but aware of the conditions.

True or False? 

With a runner on 1st and two outs, a left-handed batter gets caught out front of an off-speed pitch and hits a chopper to the 1st baseman. Caught with an in-between hop, the ball skips right over the first baseman’s glove untouched. Luckily, the second baseman makes it over in time to field the ball. Knowing the play is going to be bang-bang at first base, the batter should dive head first into the bag to get there quicker.

True or False? 

With the tying run at second base and two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, a top-spin grounder is riffled at the first baseman. He can’t get in front of the ball without avoiding the in-between hop. Since the game will be over if he makes the play, he should attempt to make the do-or-die backhanded pick rather than get in front of the ball and try to smother it. The need to get the out and end the game trumps everything else.
