USA TODAY Sports covered Friday’s court ruling which allowed a plethora of college athletes a fifth year of eligibility. While the NCAA plans to appeal the decision, the ruling has set forth a flurry of activity and uncertainty for players and coaches alike.

On the basketball side, one Division I assistant coach told The Field of 68 that this sudden change puts programs in a difficult spot with regards to financial flexibility and the relationship they have with current players on the roster.

“Now I will spend the week trying to raise money so that we can screw over kids that have worked their ass off for us all summer,” the assistant coach said.

It does raise an interesting issue across college basketball, as programs may not have reserve NIL money for this season, as they thought that their opportunity to bring in outside talent had closed.

With that said, some impact players could make a huge difference this season if the NCAA’s appeal is denied. For instance, USA TODAY’s Columbia Daily Tribune took a deeper dive into Mark Mitchell’s situation, who averaged over 18 points per game for Missouri last season.
