The Michigan Wolverines may find themselves having to pony up a significant amount of money or time to head basketball coach Dusty May.
May is worth it, so Michigan should be running to the table.
At 49 years old, May has gone 64-13 in two seasons at Michigan, and he just won a national championship. He’s one of the best coaches in college basketball, and he’s a master of the transfer portal.
His success has drawn and will continue to draw the eye of other interested parties, though. Michigan is a big-time job, but there are other intriguing opportunities out there for a coach like May.
Specifically, Front Office Sports is reporting that two NBA teams, the Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors, could try to target the Michigan coach this offseason.
“The reigning national champions could be in the market for a new coach,” Alex Schiffer of Front Office Sports wrote. “As the NBA coaching carousel takes shape, Michigan’s Dusty May has emerged as a potential target for multiple franchises… May had been tied to the Magic job before it opened, with Front Office Sports previously reporting there was mutual interest between the two parties. Multiple league sources reiterated that interest on Monday, with one adding that May could also be a candidate for the Warriors if Steve Kerr elects not to return for a 13th season with Golden State.”
Dusty May has not yet signed contract extension with Michigan
It’s easy to think that May wouldn’t want to leave Ann Arbor, where he just became a hero and is set up for yearly success in the transfer portal and NIL era.
Interestingly, though, as of late April, pen has not been put to paper on a contract extension.
May signed one in February 2025 that extended his deal through 2030 and gave him a pay raise of $1 million annually. After the championship win, athletic director Warde Manuel announced another contract extension for May, but the head coach recently revealed that nothing was signed.
“I haven’t signed. Warde and I agreed to the terms and the structure, and then after that, there’s still some I’s to dot and T’s to cross,” May said on April 29.
Could that mean that May is waiting to see if any NBA offers come his way before locking in his future with Michigan long-term?
It certainly seems like a possibility, especially if May does have some interest in coaching at the highest level of the game.
