Marquette Women’s Soccer Preview: vs Seton Hall Pirates

I’m going to use this space to work this out in my head, stick with me here.

Four teams make the Big East tournament. Marquette has nine points with one match left. They can not catch Georgetown (27 points), Xavier (25), or UConn (23). That leaves one possible spot left, which is held by Creighton and Villanova at 12 points. Marquette can get to 12 points if they beat Seton Hall in the regular season finale on Saturday night.

Marquette went to a 1-1 draw with Creighton and lost 3-0 to Villanova. Creighton beat Villanova in their matchup. If that comes to a three-way tie with Creighton losing to St. John’s on Saturday and Villanova falling to Butler, then the little mini-conference is:

Creighton: 1-0-1, 4 pointsVillanova: 1-1-0. 3 pointsMarquette: 0-1-1, 1 points

Both Villanova and Marquette miss the Big East tournament there.

On top of that, Providence has 11 points and a regular season finale with DePaul that could A) end up as a PC win and launch them to 14 points past that theoretical 12 point tie or B) go to a draw and land PC in that tie at 12 points. Marquette lost 5-0 to the Friars last week, so that’s 0-2-1 and one point for MU that way, not helpful.

If Marquette gets that Butler win over Villanova to get to the 12 point tie that is not going to go Marquette’s way anyway, Butler goes from 10 points to 13 points and renders the whole thing moot.

So…. yeah, at this point, as I type this out on Wednesday evening before the Big East puts out a weekend preview or Marquette puts out their official match preview……

Marquette’s current four match losing streak where they have a goal differential of 18-1? That has eliminated them from the Big East tournament, even though the Golden Eagles were undefeated in league play when the skid started. No matter what Saturday’s result is, Chris Allen’s second season in charge comes crashing to a halt. Even worse? He now needs a win on Saturday to improve on last year’s win total, as Marquette has been stuck on six victories.

Big East Match #10: vs Seton Hall Pirates (3-9-5, 0-8-1 Big East)

Date: Saturday, November 1, 2025Time: 7pm CentralLocation: Valley Fields, Milwaukee, WisconsinStreaming: ESPN+Live Stats: Stat BroadcastTwitter Updates: @MarquetteWSOC

Marquette is 10-3-1 all time against Seton Hall. The Golden Eagles snapped a run of back-to-back 1-0 losses with a 3-0 victory in South Orange last season. MU hasn’t beaten the Pirates at home since early October 2021.

Because I know you’re asking: The draw was at home against St. John’s, and it was 0-0 on September 27th with the Pirates outshooting the Red Storm 14-7.

That has been one of six shutouts in Big East play for Seton Hall this season, which includes each of their last three contests. All told, that’s just short of 315 minutes of scoreless soccer for the Pirates, as Jordana Bello had their last goal just 45 seconds into the second half against DePaul. The Blue Demons then scored in the 57th and 81st minutes to win 2-1. That’s a rough way to lose.

Gianna Angelillo is Seton Hall’s top scorer this season with her team high six goals also giving her the team high in points at 12. Four women have tallied an assist three times for the combined lead there as SHU has 16 helpers on their 17 goals on the year.

Seton Hall has been going back and forth between Kate Kleinsmith and Avery Strohecker as their starting goalie, with Kleinsmith getting the nod for the last three contests. With that said, she hasn’t finished any of those three and hasn’t gone the distance in a match since a 2-0 loss to Providence on October 4th. Kleinsmith is the better statistical goalie at 1.33 goals allowed per 90 minutes and a .750 save percentage. If Marquette finds themselves back in their offensive drought — part of the losing streak has been scoring just one goal in the last four matches and that 1 was after Xavier was already up 6-0 — then perhaps merely waiting until Strohecker comes in at halftime will solve their problems. She is only stopping 68.5% of shots on frame in her 855 minutes of action and that gives her a goals-against average of 1.79.
