Omaha women’s basketball achieves feat no NBA or WNBA team has in 15 years

Omaha women’s basketball took down Oral Roberts 84-75 on Wednesday night, and the victory meant a lot more than another mark in the win column. Two Mavericks punched their names onto the program’s all-time record list before the final buzzer sounded at Baxter Arena.

The team improved to 5-25 overall and 3-12 in Summit League action with the home victory. It was their second-to-last regular season contest, and they walked away with their third conference win of the year.

Just four players found the scoring column for Omaha, but that quartet dominated from start to finish. This game looked completely different from the first meeting between these programs, when the Golden Eagles rolled to a 30-point blowout.

Ali Stephens set the tempo right away, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc in the opening quarter as the Mavericks built an 11-point cushion. Oral Roberts spent the rest of the night playing catch-up and never got there.

When the game wrapped, OPTA Stats confirmed something remarkable had just happened. The statistical output Omaha produced hasn’t shown up in an NBA, WNBA or Division I box score in 15 years.

Three players delivered massive individual nights in the same game. Freshman Regan Juenemann exploded for 40 points, becoming only the second Maverick in program history to crack that number. Sarai Estupinan wasn’t far behind with 30 points of her own. Avril Smith took over the paint and grabbed 23 rebounds.
