UGA basketball lands BYU transfer forward Kanon Catchings

Georgia Bulldogs basketball head coach Mike White dipped into the transfer portal and got another impact player in BYU Cougars forward Kanon Catchings.

As a freshman last season, the six-foot-nine sophomore, originally from Brownsburg, Indiana, averaged 7.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Notably, 123 of his shot attempts were from beyond the arc, where he connected on 35% of his shots. However, he converted only 59% of his free throw opportunities.

Catchings played at Overtime Elite. The Bulldogs are building a nice reputation with Overtime Elite and have recently added Somto Cyril, a rising sophomore, and incoming freshman center Jackson McVay.

BYU’s Sweet Sixteen run in the NCAA Tournament occurred largely without significant contribution from Catchings due to injury. A knee issue sidelined him for the entirety of the Big 12 tournament, and he saw minimal action in the NCAA Tournament, playing just nine minutes total.

While Georgia has seen four players enter the transfer portal and freshman standout Asa Newell declare for the 2025 NBA draft, the Bulldogs have secured commitments from two impressive transfers. The first is Jeremiah Wilkinson, the reigning ACC Sixth Man of the Year from Cal, who is also entering his sophomore season. In his debut college year, the guard averaged 15.1 points and played just over 27 minutes per game.

Additionally, Georgia added Wofford transfer guard Justin Bailey.
