Beck status update marks huge step for Miami in post-Cam Ward era

The Miami Hurricanes are quickly becoming one of the top programs in college football once again, and a lot of that has to do with the quarterback position.

Head coach Mario Cristobal brought in Cam Ward from Washington State via the transfer portal last offseason, and that led to a 10-3 season for the Hurricanes while Ward was one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy. He was also the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Tennessee Titans.

Cristobal leveraged the transfer portal once again this offseason to try to set his team up for big success in 2025. There was a catch, though.

Former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was brought to Miami to be the starting quarterback, but he came in injured. When he transferred, he was coming off a surgery on his right elbow to repair a UCL injury he suffered in Georgia’s win over Texas in the SEC Championship game.

The idea with bringing in Beck was that Miami could go from Ward directly to another championship-level quarterback, but that elbow injury was a major question mark.

Beck didn’t throw in the spring, but Cristobal recently revealed a massive update regarding his likely starting quarterback’s throwing arm.

According to Andrea Adelson of ESPN, Beck has been throwing for the past three weeks in a rehab regimen and Cristobal has said that he’s cleared to participate in summer workouts.

“He’s good to go,” Cristobal told ESPN. “He’s exceeding every benchmark.”

This is massive news for Miami as it looks to be a College Football Playoff contender in 2025. Beck is a 6-foot-4 super senior originally from Jacksonville, Florida, who led Georgia to a 24-3 record in 27 games as starting quarterback over the past two seasons. He threw for 7,912 yards and 58 touchdowns compared to 20 interceptions in his Georgia career.

Beck was Stetson Bennett’s backup for Georgia’s two straight College Football Playoff title seasons in 2021 and 2022, so he knows what it takes to be a CFP-winning quarterback.

Cristobal and Miami are hoping he can put it all together with the Hurricanes, but he likely won’t be able to do that if he’s not healthy. This was a huge first step in the right direction.
