Jerome Carter III is a name to know in transfer portal

The transfer portal and NIL era have made things exciting in the world of college football.

Some would say it’s too interesting and more like the Wild Wild West than anything else, but without a doubt, opportunity has been created.

Specifically, we’re seeing the opportunity to “move up” for players who perhaps didn’t get a ton of “big-time” opportunities as recruits but found a way to excel at the Group of Five level.

One of those players is Old Dominion Monarchs safety Jerome Carter III, who was a star for the Monarchs in 2025.

According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Carter will be hitting the transfer portal, and he’s absolutely going to be a player to know.

Getting to know Old Dominion Monarchs transfer safety Jerome Carter III

Carter is from Lake City, Florida, and he’s a former three-star recruit. He was ranked as the No. 163 safety in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports, so we’re talking about a player who was way down in the rankings.

He’s been at Old Dominion for two seasons, and this past season, his sophomore campaign, was elite.

He notched 76 tackles, two passes defended, and six interceptions. Those six interceptions tied him for second-most in all of college football alongside players like Ricardo Jones from Clemson, Louis Moore from Indiana and Bryce Fitzgerald from Miami.

Carter will undoubtedly get transfer portal interest from schools in that category because of that output. As a recruit, he had offers from schools like Indiana, Iowa State and West Virginia, so it would not be shocking at all for him to receive calls from programs in the Big 12, Big Ten, or even the SEC.

He’ll have two years of eligibility left, so he’ll absolutely be a hot name on the transfer portal market.

Notably, his father, Jerome Carter, played defensive back at Florida State from 2001 to 2004 before being selected in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.
