Kirk Herbstreit has seen a lot of colleagues come and go over his 20-plus years at ESPN.
The former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback turned major football analyst has been the lead voice of ESPN’s college football coverage for two-plus decades. Herbstreit, an Ohio native whose dad played and coached for the Buckeyes, has been covering college football at ESPN for two-plus decades. He’s known best for his role on ESPN’s “College GameDay” and ABC’s Saturday night game of the week.
In recent years, Herbstreit has added more to his plate. He’s a Thursday Night Football analyst for Amazon Prime, covering an NFL regular season game each week. But of course he’s still best known for his college football coverage.

It’ll be fun to see what comes next for Gene, though it’s clear that ESPN’s football coverage will be worse off in his absence.
The 2025 football season is right around the corner at this point.
