Syracuse freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell III, the highest-rated signee in school history, will miss an “indefinite period of time” after suffering an undisclosed spring practice injury, the program announced Tuesday.
Russell, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound recruit from Miami, Florida, signed with the Orange last December as ESPN’s No. 4 wide receiver and No. 36 overall prospect in the 2026 class. A two-sport standout at Miami Northwestern High School, Russell joined Syracuse’s men’s basketball team in January before transitioning to the school’s football program for his debut spring camp earlier this month.

The extent of Russell’s injury and a return timeline for the coveted pass catcher are not yet clear.
“I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationships Calvin his daily and I have,” Orange coach Fran Brown said in a statement.
Expected to make an immediate impact in 2026, Russell’s injury marks a potentially significant blow to a Syracuse receiving corps missing its top seven receiving yards leaders from the program’s 3-9 finish year ago. Beyond Russell, the Orange’s new-look pass catching unit includes a series of transfer portal additions led by Elijah Moore (Florida State), Matt Outten (Penn State) and Cole Weaver (Miami, OH), all signed this offseason as part of an effort to recharge a passing attack that fell from No. 1 nationally in 2024 to 80th last fall.
Russell, who initially committed to the Orange over Miami and Michigan in July 2025, was credited with 47 catches for 742 yards and eight touchdowns in his senior season last fall.
He officially signed with Syracuse late last year as the top-ranked of the program’s two SC Next 300 additions alongside four-star defensive end Kamron Wilson (No. 286 overall). Russell appeared in one game during the 2025-26 basketball season and remained on the Orange’s basketball roster through the program’s ACC Tournament run earlier this month.
