Big Spring high school football eyes first district title since 1990

The San Angelo Standard-Times will be previewing local high school football teams throughout August ahead of the 2025 season.

Big Spring Steers

District: 3-4A DI

2024 record: 5-6, 2-1

Head coach: Cannon McWilliams

Most recent district championship: 1990

State titles: N/A

What to know

McWilliams said the Steers have the most size they have ever had in the trenches, both on offense and defense, in his nine years as head coach. That size shows up first with standout senior defensive lineman RJ Gomez, who finished the season with 81 tackles, 21 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks and six forced fumbles.

The Steers return nine starters on offense and defense — 20 lettermen in total. Among the returners is a host of talented and experienced skill players, including wide receivers Eithan Threats, Jacobi Lozano and Kaine Valenzuela.

Quarterback Marcus Rios will be one of the new faces starting Week 1 for the Steers. Rios saw some playing time last season because of injury, but McWilliams said he has earned his shot to be the starter after working his way up through the program.

With district favorite Andrews losing key numbers to graduation, Big Spring is poised to compete for a district championship for the first time since 1990.

Coach Cannon McWilliams on the 2025 season

“Last year, we were implementing a new offense and a new defense,” McWilliams said. “This year, the offense is going to be very similar, so we’re already ahead because we’ve been running that. Defensively, we’ve got a new coordinator, Carlos Cantu, and he’s tweaking a little bit of what we did last year, but we’re way ahead of where we were at this time last year scheme-wise, just because we have so much experience coming back.”

“If we can stay together with who we have right now, with a little bit of luck, and we do everything correctly and not lose anybody to grades or other issues, then we’ve got as good a shot as we do now.”
