On Monday, Deion Sanders pitched the idea of playing Colorado’s spring game against another team. Another head coach jumped at the opportunity.
While other schools eliminate their spring games, the Buffaloes will hold their showcase at Folsom Field on April 19. ESPN2 will televise the event.
Sanders told reporters that he proposed playing future spring games against outside competition. He envisioned a structure similar to NFL teams conducting joint practices before clashing in the preseason.
Later in the day, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown volunteered to help make Coach Prime’s plan a reality.
“We will come to Boulder for three days,” Brown wrote on X in a post tagging Sanders.
Sanders teased next month’s spring game potentially being the last as more programs move away from the exhibition to avoid giving opponents any scouting opportunities. However, he’d rather change the process than eliminate it.
“I don’t believe in that. I don’t really want to condone that,” Sanders said of canceling spring games. “I would like to play in the spring. Actually, I would like to play against another team in the spring. That’s what I’m trying to do right now.”

The Hall of Famer said it gets “monotonous” having teammates face each other after several practices.
“You really can’t tell the level of your guys because, you know, it’s the same old, same old,” Sanders noted. “Everybody kind of knows each other towards the end. I would like to style it like the pros. I would like to practice against someone for a few days, then you have the spring game. And I think the public will be satisfied with that tremendously.”
Football fans could find out how serious Coach Prime was about his “tremendous idea” for an external spring game. He now has a willing partner in Brown’s Orange.
Syracuse will hold its spring game a week before Colorado on April 12. The intra-squad scrimmage got moved back from SU Soccer Stadium to the JMA Wireless Dome after Billy Joel postponed his concert at the football stadium scheduled for the previous night.
