Jon Sumrall knows what the expectations are for the Florida Gators. Heck, he’s got extremely high expectations himself.
The truth of the matter is that, for as good a guy as Billy Napier was during his time in Gainesville, he could never get the job done at a high level.
Napier was fired after going 22-23 at Florida. He got 45 games to try to prove himself.
Sumrall may not get as long, especially when considering that, like Napier, he’s a Sun Belt darling who is now being asked to prove himself as a head coach in the SEC.
The pressure is on for Sumrall, but it’s worth noting that the early returns have been very positive for the Gators.
He came out strong in the 2026 transfer portal and brought in some fresh blood. There were 29 players who decided to transfer to Florida this offseason to play for Sumrall and his new staff in Gainesville. Florida’s transfer portal class was ultimately ranked in the top 30 nationally.
A few years in on the job, and that won’t be a good ranking for Sumrall. For a new head coach in the SEC, though, that’s a good number for the Gators.
Even better is what Sumrall has been doing on the 2027 recruiting trail.
Jon Sumrall, Florida cleaning up on the recruiting trail
The Gators’ 2027 class is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation with 14 recruits verbally committed.
Sumrall and the Gators have had a great spring. Half of those commitments came in April, and four recruits have committed to Florida so far this May.
A common thread amongst Florida commitments has been a belief in Sumrall. He’s also put together a staff that seems to be hitting all the right buttons, though.
“Development was a big thing in this decision,” four-star running back Andrew Beard told Rivals when he committed to Florida over this past weekend. “That matters the most to me, and they develop running backs and get them to the next level. Coach [Chris]Foster is a great coach, and my goal is to get to the NFL, and I feel he can help me do that.”
Sumrall and the Gators obviously have to go out and prove it on the field, but you can’t have a quick turnaround in 2026 without first getting some big-time momentum in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail.
The Gators have it. Now let’s see what they can do with it.
