Indiana WR enters transfer portal days before national title game

Fernando Mendoza and the Indiana Hoosiers are preparing for the College Football Playoff national title game on Monday against Carson Beck and the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes.

However, the Hoosiers saw one wide receiver announce his decision to enter the portal. Junior Jackson Wasserstrom is headed to the portal, according to Chris Hummer of 247Sports. He is staying with Indiana for the title game.

Wasserstrom has spent three seasons at Indiana, although he played in one game in 2023 and 2024. He has appeared in seven games this season, catching just two passes for 21 yards, with the last reception coming on Oct. 25 against the UCLA Bruins.

Wassertrom was a walk-on at Indiana who redshirted his freshman year but finally saw more action this season. He has earned Academic All-Big Ten twice during his career.

The 5-foot-11 WR is from Westfield High School in Indiana, so he decided to play for his home state Hoosiers and is now heading to the portal to search for more playing time.

The transfer portal closes on Jan. 16, but players in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game get a five-day extension according to the NCAA rules, so Wasserstrom has time to look for a new program while having a chance to be part of the Hoosiers’ title team.

Wasserstrom is now the 10th Indiana player to leave via the transfer portal so far this cycle, according to 247Sports tracker.
