BYU star AJ Dybantsa is headed to the league.
The long-awaited decision by Dybantsa has come through, and it’s frankly not all that surprising given his excellent freshman debut. Declining his remaining college eligibility, the Brockton, Massachusetts, native won’t be sticking around campus.
The All-American freshman is the consensus first-round pick and was largely expected to enter his name in the draft following his debut at BYU. It’d be senseless to pass up the draft at this juncture and when his stock is as high as it is.
A product of Utah Prep, Dybantsa led the country with 25.5 points, 6.8 boards, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.3 blocks per game in 35 college starts. He’d help coach Kevin Young and BYU notch a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, only to be bounced by No. 11 Texas in the first round last month.
Still, Dybantsa surpassed Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson as the No. 1 overall pick in the weeks leading up to Thursday’s decision. Dybantsa previously teased his return to Provo, Utah, for another season at BYU. Dybantsa already made school history last month with 40 points in a win over Kansas State to dethrone Kevin Durant for the most points by a freshman at the Big 12 Tournament.
To be determined, the No, 1 overall pick for the upcoming NBA Draft, scheduled for June 23-24 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, will likely fall to the Washington Wizards, Indiana Pacers or the Brooklyn Nets. Other lottery considerations include the Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings.
