Texas Tech football sparked national conversations following the Brendan Sorsby ruiling. The high-profile College Football Transfer Portal quarterback addition will play after all. However, head coach Joey McGuire pumped the brakes on Week 3 being Sorsby’s official return.
Sorsby is reinstated following his gambling controversy involving betting on live college football games. The NCAA since filed a notice of appeal. Yet as of Wednesday, Sorsby will only miss weeks one and two of the Red Raiders season. All the more reason fans believe he’ll be in action for the in-state rivalry game against Big 12 foe Houston.
Still, McGuire needed to clear the air about Sorby’s status. Which Houston Chronicle reporter Joseph Duarte helped overhear on Wednesday.
“Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire asked from crowd what, if anything, could still happen to prevent QB Brendan Sorsby from playing this season. He says Week 3 against Houston is ‘still a stretch,’” Duarte posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
The reigning Big 12 champion coach then dropped this telling nugget via Duarte.
“’He’s recovering from an addiction,’” McGuire is overheard saying. “‘I’ve sat down with this young man and what he’s going through is serious.’”
Sounds like McGuire is joining in on some counseling sessions involving Sorsby’s gambling addiction. McGuire defended his incoming Red Raiders quarterback fiercely.
“As a society, we’ve been okay with other things that happen. And allowing players to play, and this is the one thing that has united people that they were against. It’s crazy. Because it’s not murder, it’s not beating somebody,” McGuire said.
McGuire hasn’t announced a formal plan behind center amid Sorsby’s suspension. TTU opens against Abilene Christian and Oregon State before heading to conference play.
