Miami’s Cristobal putting a spin on Beck’s injury at practice

It’s a tough position for the Miami Hurricanes to be in, but at least they knew what they were getting in Carson Beck coming in.

Beck has spent the past four seasons at Georgia but transferred in January to Miami to play his final season of college ball, not all that far removed from a torn UCL that ended up requiring surgery that he suffered in UGA’s SEC Championship game win over Texas.

Miami knew he was coming in with the battered wing, and heading into spring practices, Cristobal was clear that Beck wasn’t yet recovered to the point of throwing.

Still, it had to be disappointing to start the spring off with the quarterback you specifically brought in to get you over the College Football Playoff hump sporting an injury designation. Recently speaking with the media after the first practice of spring ball, though, Cristobal put a spin on things for Miami.

How are things with Beck so far?

“As positive as you can have without actually having any kind of participation in live drills,” Cristobal said (h/t On3). “The things happened so fast and that one certainly happened a little bit faster and with less familiarity than the previous year, and so all that stuff I would say relationships and leadership, they do take time but everything from initially has been super positive. We’re really excited to see him healthy and working with our guys at full speed.”

Beck is expected to start throwing later this spring and the expectation is that he’ll be fully ready to go by the start of the season. Whether it’s in the next few weeks or next few months, though, the Hurricanes certainly have high expectations for their transfer quarterback.

“He’s athletic, he’s smart, he’s got superior arm talent, he’s accurate, he can extend plays, he can also sit in the pocket, he runs well,” Cristobal said. “He’s a great human being and he’s demonstrated leadership qualities. He’s really hard on himself, he wants to be great and one of his best qualities is that he wanted to be at Miami.”
