It might be the celebration of America’s 250th Birthday, but that doesn’t stop rivals from swiping at each other on social media. Such is the world of college football in 2026. And on the Independence Day holiday, it was TCU football taking the first shot at Texas Tech, when the Horned Frogs’ social media team posted this.
Now, incase you’re new to the league, or just forgot what happened that day, TCU beat Texas Tech 82-27 in Fort Worth. That was actually the first year of Heartland College Sports’ existence, and I found my article on it here!
Trevone Boykin threw a school-record seven touchdown passes and the 10th-ranked Horned Frogs showcased a new fast-paced offense by scoring the most points in their history in an 82-27 rout of Texas Tech on Saturday. At the time, it was their first win in three tries against the Red Raiders since joining the Big 12 two years prior. The 82 points are a Big 12 record for a conference game.
Boykin had two scoring tosses each to Josh Doctson and Deante’ Gray, who had a 92-yarder about 2 minutes before Ty Slanina caught a 57-yard touchdown that gave TCU a 61-20 lead midway through the third quarter. At the time, TCU scored the most points by an FBS school since Oklahoma State beat Savannah State 84-0 on Sept. 1, 2012, and it was the highest total for a ranked opponent against an FBS opponent since No. 6 Wisconsin beat Indiana 83-20 on Nov. 13, 2010.
Texas Tech Responds
Well, the Red Raiders had to respond. So here’s what their official football account said on X.
The Red Raiders are leaning into being the “hunted” in the Big 12 Conference, and clearly are enjoying that role as well. They aren’t afraid to own it. And that’s exactly what they did here.
And now we sit here just a couple of days ahead of Big 12 football media days with some fireworks, figuratively speaking, between two Big 12 programs in Texas. And guess what? I’m here for it. I’m sure you are as well.
With media days here, we’d love to see you over on our free Heartland College Sports forums talking with other Big 12 fans. Plenty of fireworks there as well!
