Texas Tech softball pulled off the most improbable comeback in NCAA softball this century on Saturday in the Regional round of the NCAA Softball Tournament. Down 8-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Texas Tech kept plugging away. A single from Kaitlyn Terry was followed by a two-run home run from Jackie Lis. The Red Raiders scored six more runs to send the game to extra innings, and then after Ole Miss tacked on a run in the top half of the inning, the Red Raiders scored two in the bottom of the 8th to win 10-9.
And as ESPN Stats & Info noted, this was the first time in 641 attempts this century that a team has come back in this specific way.
How It Went Down
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lauren Allred’s second at-bat of the inning was one that Texas Tech fans will remember for a long time. With the bases loaded, two outs and on the brink of defeat, Allred hit the first pitch over the leftfield wall for a game-tying grand slam, which ultimately sent the game to extra innings.
Ole Miss would retake the lead in the top of the eighth on a Persy Llamas RBI single. But then, in the bottom of the 8th, Jasmyn Burns tied the game with an RBI single, fMia Williams sent a deep fly to get Lis into scoring position and Taylor Pannell hit the game-winning sacrifice fly to finish off the 10-9 win.
Texas Tech still needs one more win Sunday to advance to its second straight Super Regional.
