While the talk around the Texas Tech football program is on the Brendan Sorsby ruling from the NCAA in denying his eligibility for the 2026 season, there is a question if he plays, though the school is appealing the decision. In the meantime, Texas Tech football head coach Joey McGuire will be preparing his team for the 2026 season, with him speaking about a specific matchup next season.
Though the in-state game between the Red Raiders and the Texas Longhorns is always highly anticipated, it’ll be even more so this season after head coach Steve Sarkisian made a jab about Texas Tech’s easy schedule.
There is a problem, though, which is that the two programs don’t face each other this season, as McGuire said Thursday that he’d want to buy out “Texas State and Abilene Christian and would love to buy out those games to play Texas this season in Week 1.”
“We would love to play Texas,” McGuire said, via Chris Vannini, further stating that if a potential matchup can’t be played in Lubbock, Texas, the two teams can play at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Steve Sarkisian’s subtle comments about Texas Tech football
Looking at the original comments from Sarkisian about the Texas Tech football team, he wouldn’t even say the Red Raiders out loud, but many believe it was a shot at them when asked about the strength of schedule playing part in the College Football Playoff.
“There’s a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the CFP this year,” Sarkisian said.
Looking at this upcoming season, there is a question if Sorsby will play at all. While McGuire says Sorsby “made a mistake” with the gambling scandal, he shouldn’t miss the whole season.
“I do believe there should be consequences, but it’s my opinion that he shouldn’t be penalized for the rest of this year or his career,” McGuire said.
There’s no denying that the Red Raiders’ 2026 will be one to watch.
