West Virginia running back Clay Ash is expected to enter the transfer portal, per 247Sports. The sophomore looks for a new opportunity after earning an increased role in the 2025 season with the Mountaineers.
Ash started in two games for the Mountaineers and totaled 43 carries for 131 yards on the season, providing steady production as a rotational back behind West Virginia’s primary rushers.
After spending the past two seasons in Morgantown, the 5-foot-9 running back now enters the portal with two years of eligibility remaining, offering potential value as an experienced depth piece with starting reps under his belt.
Rich Rodriguez just wrapped up his first season back at the helm for West Virginia, guiding the Mountaineers to a disappointing 4-8 finish in 2025, a campaign that tied the program’s lowest win total since 2013.
It marked an up-and-down season for West Virginia, which still managed to notch a pair of marquee wins, taking down rival Pitt in the Backyard Brawl and upsetting a ranked Houston squad on the road.
Those high points provided glimpses of the program’s potential under Rich Rod, but they were overshadowed by lingering issues with consistency on both sides of the ball.
WVU missed out on bowl eligibility for the first time since the 2022 season.
