Michigan football stretched its College Football Recruiting tear to Thursday. Including beating out Notre Dame once again for a four-star talent. Only this time edge rusher Xavier Muhammad is the recruiting win for head coach Kyle Whittingham and company.
The big 6-foot-5, 275-pound defender from South Houston High in Texas confirmed his college choice to Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals. He even shared a “let’s go bleed blue” message to Fawcett in announcing his decision to the college football world.
The Wolverines land the nation’s No. 8 overall defensive lineman for the 2027 class per On3/Rivals. In addition to his top 10 ranking, Muhammad checks in as the No. 12 talent from the state of Texas.
Whittingham tabbed defensive tackles coach Larry Black Jr. to run point on Muhammad’s recruitment. The first-year defensive tackles coach for Michigan now lands one of his highest ranked prospects yet. Black came to Ann Arbor via Vanderbilt to boost the interior of the Wolverines’ defense. Muhammad immediately presents the skillset to become the next dominating trench defender.
He’s a quick-footed defender bringing an explosive first step that quickly disrupts the trenches. Muhammad fires off his arms right away to gain leverage and extension, then turns to his feet to deliver the push needed in clogging the running lane.
But it’s not just football skills that makes Muhammad intriguing. He presents a past basketball background to the Wolverines too, having averaged 15.1 points per game as a sophomore post presence.
Muhammad joins the wide receiver Burrell as Michigan’s newest ’27 pledges during the week of May 11.
