Robert Griffin III is returning to the broadcast booth after an eight-month absence from television.

The former Heisman Trophy winner, who parted ways with ESPN last year, is reportedly joining Fox Sports as their second-ranked college football game analyst for the upcoming season.

“BREAKING: Robert Griffin III is expected to be hired by Fox Sports as its No. 2 game analyst, per @TheAthletic. RG3 was fired by ESPN last year,” reported Dov Kleiman on X.

35-year-old Griffin appears set to fill the role recently vacated by Brock Huard, who stepped away from broadcasting to become an assistant coach for his son’s high school football team.

The former quarterback will team up with play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti, though sources indicate the deal hasn’t been finalized yet.

The situation highlights the complexities of broadcast contracts in sports media.

When ESPN terminates an employee who remains under contract, they continue paying their salary but retain the right to prevent them from accepting positions with competitors.

Griffin’s broadcasting journey began in summer 2021 when he impressed both ESPN and Fox Sports during auditions.

He ultimately chose ESPN, quickly earning spots on their “Monday Night Football” pregame coverage and becoming a prominent voice in their college football broadcasts.

Fox Sports never lost interest in Griffin’s talents. When Reggie Bush’s contract dispute with Fox emerged in 2022, Griffin was considered a prime candidate to join “Big Noon Kickoff.”

That opportunity didn’t materialize as Bush remained for another year before being replaced by Mark Ingram II.

Meanwhile, Griffin’s role at ESPN shifted before his departure last summer.

Despite being off the major networks, he made a notable return to sports broadcasting with an appearance on Netflix’s Christmas Day NFL studio programming.
