Monday, April 27: Two of world hockey’s oldest and most prestigious trophies will be decided this Saturday, May 2 at Three Rock Rovers, as eight teams compete in a final day of knockout action to determine the winners of the Men’s and Women’s AIG Irish Senior Cups and Irish Junior Cups.
The day begins at 10:30 with the Women’s Irish Junior Cup, a competition dating back to 1909 and contested by second XIs from across Ireland. Old Alex II will face Railway Union II, with both clubs boasting proud histories in the competition and aiming to lift the title once again.
The Men’s Irish Junior Cup follows at 12:30, as Corinthian II take on Lisnagarvey II. This will be only the second time in the competition’s 135-year history that the sides have met in a final, with Corinthian claiming a 1-0 victory in the 2020 decider.
Attention then turns to the two senior finals, beginning with the Women’s AIG Irish Senior Cup at 14:45, where Railway Union face Monkstown. Although the competition was first established in 1903, it is in recent years that these two sides have come to the fore. Railway Union will be aiming for a third successive title, an achievement matched only once before in the women’s game by Pembroke Wanderers in 1949, who went on to claim a fourth the following year. Monkstown, meanwhile, continue their impressive rise. The tier two club have reached just their second final, having won the title in their first appearance in 2023.
The Men’s AIG Irish Senior Cup Final brings the day to a close at 16:45, as Three Rock Rovers take on Lisnagarvey. Both sides have been among the strongest in the country this season and will look to add hockey’s oldest club trophy to their honours. For Lisnagarvey, victory would secure a third successive title, a fifth in six years, and a remarkable 28th overall, further underlining their dominance in the competition. Three Rock Rovers, however, can draw on a rich history of their own. Their most recent title came in 2019, while their first was won in 1898, just five years after both the club and the competition were established. A win on Saturday would see them add another chapter to that history and move into second place on the all-time winners list.
