Auston Matthews, when asked about his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs
TSN Sports: Auston Matthews was asked a few questions this morning about his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Reporter 1: “Auston, there’s been a lot of people projecting their thoughts on what you think of the future of this franchise and your place within it. I’m sure you’ve heard that. How do you view your future with the Leafs moving forward beyond this season?”
Matthews: “Yeah, I mean, I can’t predict the future. Obviously, there’s steps that kind of have to, you know, take place. They’re going to hire new leadership at management and stuff like that. So, you know, I don’t really know. I think that’s kind of like I said, I can’t really predict the future.”

Reporter 2: “But for yourself, personally, is this a place you want to be, or would reject any suggestion that you should not be here for the remainder of your contract?”
Matthews: “Yeah, I think all that stuff. I mean, there’s always noise and there’s always chatter. I think personally, you know, I really don’t pay attention all of that. I just focus on myself, focus on this team and trying to be a part of the solution.”
Justin Bourne: “Speculating, but feels to me like Matthews heads into next season in a similar spot to Quinn Hughes last year. “I’m in if we’re good, I’m in if there’s a direction, if, if, if.” We can’t know what a new GM will do, but seems like you can sell him on a plan if you’ve got one.”

Michael Traikos: Auston Matthews, when asked if he’d be on board with a one-year retool.
“I don’t know. I don’t know what that means. I think you have to have a more clear understanding of what that means — retool, rebuild, whatever that is. That’s something that’s going to be up to management.”
