Tuesday, April 14: Penultimate EY Hockey League outings for eight Men’s and Women’s sides take place this week under the floodlights as sides continue to chase top spot, EY Champions Trophy Play-Off places and topflight survival as the final weekend of the league season looms.
On Tuesday, Old Alex host Loreto in both sides’ second-last league match of the season. There is plenty on the line for the hosts as they pursue a sixth league win of the campaign which would take them back into the EY Champions Trophy Play-Off place, but more importantly restore their gap from the relegation zone. YMCA and Monkstown also meet on Tuesday in the Men’s EYHL in a local derby. Visitors Monkstown can guarantee a play-off place should they secure all three points, while YMCA can keep their slim hopes of taking the sixth and final play-off place if they can secure the win.
On Wednesday, two high stakes Ulster derbies will take centre stage in the Women’s and Men’s EYHL. Queen’s University host Portadown in the Women’s EYHL in a must win game for both sides. Queen’s University have an opportunity to guarantee safety and a Play-Off place with a victory, while a win for Portadown would see them climb out of the relegation zone and into sixth heading into the final round of fixtures. In the Men’s EYHL, Cookstown host title chasing Banbridge, with the visitors lining up a return to top spot should they win at Camlin Park.
