Matt Marchese: “Like, if you’re trying to evaluate this team, when you look at it, how many changes realistically does this team need to make in order to be anywhere near a playoff team next year?
Friedman: “Well, you know what? I just think that it’s a good question. I mean, look, they, they need some energy. There’s no question about it. You know, I obviously, I think (Easton) Cowan got a lot of credit week for what he did, and he deserves it. Took on a much bigger guy. I think that’s kind of the thing that everybody was looking forward to seeing, or wanted to see.

You know, I think that, I definitely think the team has to get faster. I think they have to, I mean, a lot of this is going to depend on, you know, what, you know, what Matt, how Matthews looks, what he decides to do?
Like, I think a lot of the decisions are probably going to be made for them. You know, how do guys feel after this year? How does some of the exit meetings go? What are some guys going to do?
But the bottom line is, the mix they have, it is, is going to be different. Like, you know, I also think, and I know that he’s not like a long-term solution, but I really, I would love to hear what Tanev has to say. Yeah, you know, like, because, like, they, you know, they were struggling this year already, but he’s such an important part of the team, both breaking the puck out of his own zone. We all know he’s a good passer. And I think his presence, the injuries he suffered this year, him being out, you know, I think it’s been a huge loss for them, like in the room.
And I just think the big question is going to be, like when they have their exit meetings in a couple of weeks, you know, How does everybody feel? You know, is everybody happy? Does anybody want to go anywhere?

And then, of course, the decisions are going to be made about, you know, the front office and the coaching staff. Like this is going to be an offseason of change in Toronto, and they’re definitely not going to be coming back the same. I think what’s still to be determined is what this is all going to look like.
