Saturday, April 18: A stunning finale to the Men’s EY Hockey League saw Lisnagarvey crowned champions as they beat YMCA by a single goal to capitalise on Banbridge’s draw against Avoca.
The destination of the league title hung in the balance heading into the final day, with just a single point seeing Banbridge sit above Lisnagarvey in the standings, with the former facing Avoca and the latter taking on YMCA, both on home turf.
At Havelock Park, Banbridge led after 19 minutes thanks to Louis Rowe, but Avoca fought back to level terms thanks to a Shane O’Donoghue penalty corner. The home side looked on track to secure the title when Matthew McKee restored their lead before the end of the third quarter but Avoca spoiled the celebrations, scoring on the final whistle from a penalty corner to open the door for Lisnagarvey.
On Comber Road, Lisnagarvey took the opportunity to go top, with just a single goal from talisman Matthew Nelson enough to see them overcome a resilient YMCA side.
Elsewhere, Corinthian secured a play-off place on the final day with victory over Cookstown to climb to sixth. The side had to come from behind in order to secure the three points but a Gregory Williams hattrick and goal apiece for Harry St Ledger and Ian Stewart was more than enough for them to leave Camlin Park with the win.
In Garryduff, Monkstown got the three points they needed to lockdown fifth place and ensure they reached the play-offs. Hosts Cork C of I made it tricky for the visitors, keeping the deficit to just a single goal until the 30th minute when Monkstown eventually pulled away.
And in Serpentine Avenue, Three Rock Rovers pulled off a sensational late comeback to draw 2-2, but the hosts secured the bonus point and bragging rights in the shootout.
The final results mean that Lisnagarvey and Banbridge will progress directly to the EY Champions Trophy Finals Weekend on May 9, while Three Rock will face Corinthian and Pembroke will host Monkstown on April 25 in the EY Champions Trophy Play-Offs in a battle to secure the final two places.
