Artemi Panarin may prefer a trade that comes with an extension

Friedman: “I don’t. I don’t want to go there right now, because I just don’t know Kyle. I don’t know who the leading candidate is. I’ll be honest. Like I, I just want to be transparent with everybody. I don’t know who the leading candidate is.

You know, for one thing, he’s got huge say over it. And for another, you know, as I mentioned, I think the Rangers are trying to get, Brock Nelson, the deal was Calum Ritchie, a first-round pick, a conditional third. There was a player who went with Nelson, and Oliver Kylington went to the Islanders, too. But that is the kind of return they’re looking for here.
I think the other thing here, too, and I do believe it more now, I think pan Panarin’s preference is to go with an extension. I think there are some teams he would potentially go as a rental to.
Like one of the teams I’ve heard he might be interested in as a rental, potentially, is Dallas. And I think that, you know, the thing about Dallas is their ability to do anything with term probably depends on their decision with Jason Robertson, right? And so I think that becomes the question. I think right now, Dallas is, until they sort out what happens long-term with Robertson, we’ll see. You know, if they’re a long-term player for anything.
But Anaheim, they can do, they could easily do a Nelson-type deal with the Rangers. Washington. I think could do that too. I’ve heard that Washington prefers it with an extension. You know, all of a sudden, the Capitals after a wildly entertaining game on Saturday in Edmonton that, unfortunately they, they couldn’t hold.
You know, the Capitals are also one of those teams. You know, they’re, they’re five points out of the wild card. However, teams like them, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Columbus, they’ve got the Islanders in third place in the Metro, there at 59. So those teams that are in the Metro, they might have two shots at this, the wild card shot and the Metro shot.
You know, those, those teams that are chasing in the Atlantic, you know, Detroit and the Tampa have a really good head start, and Buffalo has a little bit of space, although not as much. Right now, you would definitely think that those Metro teams have the advantage to go to the playoffs in terms of how many avenues they could have.

But I think the Capitals would do it with an extension, potentially, they can do it. You know, I had a lot of interesting reaction to my LA theory on Friday, from absolutely they should do it, to, you know, I’ll tell you this. I think the Kings are asking themselves some pretty honest questions.

But I think the Kings are asking themselves some pretty hard questions, and one of them is, does it make sense for them to give up futures and prospects? Now, I think you know if you’re comfortable trading for Panarin, him with an extension, I think that’s different.
Although again, you know, as someone said to me, what does that extension look like? If it was, if it was two times $10 (million), Kyle, or two times $12 (million), I think there would be a lot of people that would jump at it. Once you start getting into four years, maybe five, that’s where some people are going to get nervous.
But, you know, my theory about the Kings was, that I do think they’re asking themselves some pretty tough questions about who they are and where they’re going, and I do believe that’s true.
I always assume that there’s teams that are in there that I’m not aware of. Like, people were like, would he go to Vegas? Vegas is in on everybody. Would you go to Carolina? Carolina is in on everybody. You know, a lot of people wonder about Minnesota. I get very mixed messages on Minnesota for Panarin. I’ve got some people who think, yes, but I’ve got other people who said that’s, that’s not happening, like it’s just not happening.

So we’ll see. We have some idea of what the Rangers want. We have some idea who’s in there. We have some idea who might consider it without an extension. And then we still have a question about what that extension looks like.”
