Teams calling the New York Islanders about Mathew Barzal is nothing new

Stefen Rosner: New York Islanders GM Mathieu Darche is getting calls on Mathew Barzal, which is nothing new. The Islanders have missed the playoffs the past two seasons, and the free agent center market is thin.

On Friday, it appeared that Peter Laviolette was going to be the next head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs

@Nylanderthews: Nick Kypreos on the Real Kyper & Bourne Show said that he was told on Friday that Peter Laviolette was going to be the next head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Lavoilette was seen in town. The Los Angeles Kings did some fast work on the weekend to get him away from the Maple Leafs.

NHL Rumors: The Vancouver Canucks, and the Chicago Blackhawks

Potential Buffalo Sabres trade candidate if/when they look to move out money

Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic: The Buffalo Sabres have $12.9 million in projected salary cap space with some free agents they’ll need to make decisions on. They may need to move out some salary. For 2027-28, they have $53.8 million in projected cap space.

UFAs: Alex Tuch, Beck Malenstyn, Josh Dunne, Logan Stanley, Luke Schenn, Tanner PearsonRFAs: Zach Benson, Peyton Krebs, Michael Kesselring

The Sabres would like to sign Tuch and Benson to long-term deals, but may not be able to without moving out salary. When looking at AFP Analytics projected cap hits, the Sabres would be around $26 million to re-sign Tuch, Benson and a few others – ($10.1 million), Benson ($6.95 million), Krebs ($3.5 million), Malenstyn ($2.6 million) and Kesselring (@2.86 million)

Potential trade candidates

Jordan Greenway – $4 million for one more season – Five-team no-trade list – May not be an easy trade, but should be possible.

Ryan McLeod – $5 million for three more seasons – Back-to-back 50-point seasons. An ideal No. 3 center that can kill penalties.

Bowen Byram – $6.25 million for one more season – They’d like to extend the top-four defenseman, but does he want to stay long-term?

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen – $4.75 million for three more seasons – Would they be okay with Alex Lyon, Colten Ellis and Devon Levi, or would they want to target someone else?

Jason Zucker – $4.75 million for one more year – A locker room leader who put up 45 points in 62 games.

The Edmonton Oilers Want Mike Babcock

Jack Quinn – $3.375 million for one more year – A nice price for a 20-goal, 51-point player. Is there an upgrade out there or would they get more production from one of their younger players.

Justin Danforth – $1.8 million for one more year – Had two surgeries last year after breaking his knee cap. A versatile fourth-liner.
