NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, and the Winnipeg Jets

Will Christian Dvorak’s extension push Kiefer Sherwood talks forward, or will Sherwood end up being traded?

TSN: Chris Johnston notes that as of the end of the holiday, there was a still a big gap in the contract extension talks between the Vancouver Canucks and Kiefer Sherwood. The Philadelphia Flyers signed Christian Dvorak to a five-year contract extension with just over $5 million a season. It’s not a perfect comparable but..

“And while it’s not a perfect comparable for Sherwood, one’s a center, one’s a winger, you know, they are in the same age band. Sherwood has outscored Dvorak, and there’s some thought maybe that could push conversations more towards getting something done. If not, of course, we’ll be talking about him getting traded at some point before the trade deadline.”

The Winnipeg Jets aren’t giving up on the season, and are looking to add some scoring help

Judy Owen on TSN: The Winnipeg Jets sure didn’t see this downward spiral coming. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is looking for ways to turn things around and is talking to teams. The trading of draft picks over the past couple of seasons is catching up with them a bit.

“You’re talking about your own individual situation, you’re talking about everyone else’s situations, where they may go,” Cheveldayoff said.

“You’re having the conversations with other managers to see what their short-term and long-term plans are, and you deal with it accordingly.”

Coach Scott Arniel said he’s not thinking about his own job security right now.

TSN: The Winnipeg Jets aren’t throwing the towel in on the season, and GM Cheveldayoff is looking for scoring, according to Darren Dreger. Easier said than done.

“But ask any general manager in the National Hockey League, any scoring forward with term just isn’t available. So, Winnipeg is looking at all options. Maybe it’s an unproven young player with some upside from a productive perspective that surfaces between now and the March 6th trade deadline.

But until then, they’ll continue to kick tires. And there’s also uncertainty as to what Winnipeg would be willing to unload as an asset to acquire a piece up front. So, there’s still a lot of work ahead.”
