Gord Stellick: “Okay, trade talk, everyone loves trade talk. It’s sexy. I don’t care what language it was decades ago. Nowadays, so it seemed like this goaltending by committee Carolina’s done that, maybe a lot of teams might do, but there are some stud goaltenders.
And the interesting one, out of the blue, somewhat out of the blue, Connor Hellebuyck. And I know you’ve talked about it a lot on your podcast, what have you, where there’s smoke, there’s fire, or where there’s smoke, is there something that get figured out? What’s your gut feel?”
Elliotte Friedman: “I think there’s smoke. I think there’s something going on. And Gordie, your time in front offices, that the more this kind of stuff gets out, the harder it can be on people. We’ve had two trade requests come public, Dylan Larkin and Darnell Nurse, and you know people are frustrated about that.
And I think it’s made some other people kind of go underground and make it harder to confirm, and there’s definitely something going on with Hellebuyck. But I’ve been warned there’s a kind of nuance to it, and if I don’t know something 100%, I don’t like to guess. So there’s something there, but I don’t know exactly what it is.”

Host: “So, Connor Hellebuyck, you mentioned it there. I’m curious about this. Is this something a little bit different? And it’s just, I don’t know how much we’re hearing from it, or my first thought when I heard about Connor Hellebuyck was another American player playing in Canada that wants out.”
Dave Pagnotta: “No, this is more. If that were the case, I mean, and I know that’s the tie in, especially everything that’s happened after the Olympics. Dylan Larkin wanted to go primarily play with some of his Team USA buddies and things like that.
I think this is more. And Hellebuyck kind of said it at the end of the season, kind of threw a little bit of a warning to the club, he wants to win, and he got a taste of it with USA, and recognized after the season that the Jets had that there was regression.
Kevin Cheveldayoff, their GM, has to; they don’t have a second line, they have 1/3 of a second line with Cole Perfetti. They need to fill those holes, and I think the warning shot was fill these holes or you’re going to have to have something else on your hands next summer. And I think that’s where things are at, and I think that’s where some teams started to poke around and say, okay, well, maybe we can get ahead of this now, is this a possibility?

This goes back to last month, little over a month ago, just beginning of May, you started to hear some teams starting to poke around and at the time, the Jets were going, “No, this is not something we want to explore at the moment.” But that chatter has, seems to have continued, and then, there’s a report of a formal trade request, and you know things of that nature.
Again, I kind of categorize it as a warning shot more than an actual request, but it’s clearly something that teams are trying to figure out if they can make work.”
