The Rising NHL Salary Cap Has Made the Offseason a Little More Interesting

The rising cap is definitely making things more exciting around the league

The Christ Johnston Show: Johnston and Julian McKenzie talk about the rising cap making things more exciting around the league with offer sheets and trading.

** NHLRumors.com transcriptions

McKenzie: “Yeah, I mean, if anything, it should accelerate GMs to try to pay their players as fast as they can. Even a guy like Mavrik Bourque, who for the last two years I saw as an offer sheet candidate, who ends up getting flipped to the Nashville Predators. They signed into that extension. Like, if I’m a GM right now and I’m looking at my, my talent who could be offer sheeted, like you, you might have to get to stepping on that. That’s at least how I would see it.”

Johnston: “Yeah, look, Maverik Bourque was traded three hours before free agency opened, right? Because he was an offer sheet candidate. Because I think he would have received one, you know, had Dallas, you know, let him become officially a restricted free agent, which they didn’t.

Remaining NHL Free Agents May Need to Lower Their Expectations Now

You know, I, who this is, this is the kind of the cool thing when the league shifts. Like, when, when we have this growing cap, and obviously players are getting paid more. We’re going to see some contracts. We’ve already seen contracts we’re not used to seeing for you know types of players.

And then now you know I think just there’s, there’s a little more chaos element, frankly. I mean, look at the last two weeks. How many trades we’ve seen. And then you get this, this offer sheet situation.

You know, it’s a really interesting time. I think around the league, maybe things have gotten a little stale in the flat cap world. You know, business was sort of done a certain way, and, and the rules are, the rules are changing.

And I think that’s why, as I mentioned, so many people are excited by the fact that Carlsson actually got something like this. Because you know it was always a possibility, but no one ever wanted to open that door. Well, someone’s opened that door, and I,I don’t think you can put the genie right back in the bottle.”
