Rising American Nishesh Basavareddy has a new coach in his corner this week at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: Gilles Cervara.
The longtime coach of Daniil Medvedev will join the California native this week, with an eye on helping the 20-year-old world No.167 reach new hights.
“Obviously he had a long and successful partnership with Daniil, who was a good player before they started working together, but they did a lot of great things together,” Basavareddy told ATPTour.com.
“I thought that experience at the highest level could help me where I’m at in my career. It’s not just the tennis; he’s interested in all aspects. He’s diligent and professional in areas such as nutrition and fitness and that will help me.”
Basavarredy, a former junior world No.3 who attended Stanford for two seasons, reached a career-high ranking of No.99 in June of last year. He made his tour-level debut at last year’s Next Gen Finals, going 1-2 in round robin play.
“I’m thrilled about this project with a healthy player and a positive environment, someone who wants to build something after many months without a proper structure,” Gilles Cervara, who will be working with his player between Florida and Dubai, told L’equipe.
The pair began their work at the Mouratoglou Academy in the South of France, and will also use that location as a training hub, per Tennis Majors.
“He’s a young man who isn’t confined to the United States and who wants to work with a French coach. It’s a great adventure. There are quite a few things to accomplish that align with my coaching profile.”
Cervara guided Medvedev to the No.1 ranking and the 2021 US Open title, as well as five other major finals during their fruitful eight-year partnership that ended last summer.
