Continuing recovery from a back injury, Caroline Garcia has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open.
The Mutua Madrid Open is set for April 21st-May 4th at the Caja Magica.
Two-time French Open doubles champion Garcia announced on social media treatment and recovery from the back injury prevents her from playing Madrid. Garcia, whose status for next month’s WTA 1000 tournament in Rome is uncertain, said her “main goal is to arrive strong and healthy for Roland Garros.”
The clay-court Grand Slam begins on May 25th in Paris.
“After more tests on my back, it’s clear I won’t be able to play in Madrid,” Garcia wrote in an Instagram post. “I need to take some time for treatment and recovery. I’ll do everything I can to be ready for Rome, but the main goal is to arrive strong and healthy for Roland Garros.
“It’s tough to accept. After the break last year, I came back feeling happier, clearer, and more motivated. The results weren’t there yet, but I truly believed in the path I was on. This setback hurts—but I’ll use it to come back stronger.”
The 31-year-old Garcia has posted a 3-6 record this year and has not played since suffering a 6-2, 7-5 loss to World No. 2 Iga Swiatek at last month’s Miami Open.
Former world No. 4 Garcia hasn’t contested a clay-court match since losing to Jaqueline Cristian in the opening round of the Paris Olympics at Roland Garros last July.
