According to the latest update on the health of San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, the legendary coach is not expected to return this season, and his future with the team is in doubt.

ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania provided an update on Popovich’s health on Saturday night, as the Spurs head coach recovers from a “mild stroke” at the beginning of November. As reported by Charania Popovich is not expected back this year, and his future is “uncertain:”

Popovich has not coached since early November. He suffered a mild stroke ahead of the team’s November 2 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson stepped into the head coaching role that night on an interim basis, and he’s since posted a record of 21-27 with the Spurs.

Popovich remains the NBA’s winningest head coach with 1,390 regular-season victories, along with another 170 post-season victories. San Antonio has won five NBA titles under his stewardship.

San Antonio is also dealing with the absence of second-year star Victor Wembanyama, who was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The Spurs believe that condition is an isolated incident, and expect Wembanyama to make a full recovery.
