Medvedev Philosophical About Career Win No.400 in Halle

It’s shaping up to be a week of milestones for Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. Today he claimed his 400th career win, defeating Quentin Halys 6-2, 7-5, and tomorrow he could earn his 50th career grass court win, against either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alex Michelsen.

But for Medvedev, the wins don’t matter as much as the big titles.

“To be 100 percent honest, the wins, I don’t think they matter much,” he said.

Medvedev shared a story about Mikhail Youzhny approaching his 500th win. He asked Youzhny’s coach what would happen if the milestone was never reached, and the coach tossed some wisdom his way.

“His coach was like ‘What will change in his life if he makes 500 or 499?’ Medvedev said.

“I was like, it’s true. Grand Slams are important, titles are important. A lot of things are important in tennis, but the match wins by itself, I don’t think they mean much, but if I manage to break some records, maybe in my country, with the most wins, then I’m happy to do it.”

Medvedev has won 306 matches (111 losses) on hard courts, with 18 titles. On grass he has 49 wins against 23 losses, and one title. On clay he is 45-35 with a title.

The Russian is the tenth active ATP player to hit the 400-win mark.
