Jannik Sinner spent the last few days back home in Italy, barbecuing and playing ping pong with friends and family, before heading to Germany to begin his grass court season at Halle.

Though he said he had a “relaxed” time, Sinner admits that it wasn’t exactly easy to keep from dwelling on the three championship points he had against Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s Roland-Garros final for the ages in Paris.

“I had already a few sleepless nights, but I think every day it gets better,” Sinner said, according to the ATP. “It was for sure a tough loss. I still think about these couple of points, and it won’t stop here – I know that.” Sinner says there are still plenty of positives to take from his clay-court season, and the final. “You can still see the positive side,” he said. “I’ve never played tennis on clay like this, I went to Rome, I made the final there, in Paris I made the final of a Grand Slam – Amazing – and then the level that [me and Carlos] have played was extremely high, so I was happy to be a part of this.”

Sinner says getting back to the challenge of grass and beginning his title defense in Halle might be best to help him take his mind off the shattering loss he suffered in the longest Roland-Garros final in history.

“I think that for me to play another tournament is positive, because every match is a new beginning, and I must be mentally ready to give my all on the court,” he said. “Therefore, it is great I can be here in Halle.”

Sinner, who won his lone grass-court title in Halle last year, owns a 21-9 lifetime record on the surface. He went 9-1 last year on the surface, losing only to Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

“The first practice session was OK,” he told the media. “I hadn’t played since Paris, so my general feeling on the court was not so perfect, but I think today it will go better.

“I think a good grass-court player can move well. The ball can bounce a bit funny because of the grass, and you have to serve intelligently. But in general, it is a surface on which I took a step forward last year and we will see how it goes this year.”
