Jannik Sinner looked a little lethargic during the middle of the opening set of his round of 16 matchup with Francisco Cerundolo, and commentators even speculated that he might not make it through the match.
Whatever ailed him early, it was gone by the end of the match.
“I was up twice with the break in the first set and I could not convert,” Sinner said. “I put myself in not an easy situation, but I am happy with how I ended the match and I felt much better. Hopefully, it will give me the confidence to start off in a good way tomorrow. Hopefully, I can recover physically, which is my main priority. Today was a great match and a great performance from my side.”
Sinner rifled past the Argentine to secure his 23rd consecutive indoor hard court win and book his spot in the Rolex Paris Masters finals, 7-5, 6-1. The Italian will face Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals on Friday in the French capital.
Second-seeded Sinner, who can overtake Carlos Alcaraz at the top of the ATP rankings if he wins the title in Paris, is into his 18th career Masters quarterfinal.
He was broken twice in the opening set but went on to win eight of the final nine games against Cerundolo to become the 12th active player to have reached at least the quarterfinals at all nine Masters 1000 events.
Sinner has already won Masters titles in Miami, Canada, Cincinnati and Shanghai this year.
The 24-year-old also claimed his 50th win of the season, against six losses.
