Kobe Brand continues reaching back into its archive with Protro versions of past releases, now tapping the Kobe 8 “Shanghai Fireworks” for a drop sure to draw plenty of eyeballs.
The now industry-standard “China tour” is just one of many ways Kobe Bryant paved the way for today’s generation of hoopers, the Mamba making near-yearly summer promotional trips to China for Nike in the mid-2000s and beyond. 2013 was a landmark year in that regard, Kobe and the Lakers squaring off against Steph Curry and the Warriors in two preseason games that October, one in Beijing and one in Shanghai.
Released as a China exclusive, the Kobe 8 “Shanghai Fireworks” vaulted to the top of collectors’ wish lists thanks to its limited availability and vibrant upper graphics. The engineered mesh sports lively streaks of light, tying in perfectly with China’s deep cultural connection to fireworks. The Protro stays true to the original with a “Laser Orange/Cinnabar/Safety Orange” color palette, though the tech has been updated to modern standards.
