Double play with the bases loaded in the 9th continues trend of dead bats in series loss – Dodgers Digest

Dead bats, dead series.

3-2 loss in excrutiating fashion.

======

So far in 2026, Tyler Glasnow has been unusually great in terms of command, which has powered his elite-tier results on the mound. Today represented a step back in that regard, and yet he was still overall very good.

After working around a walk in the 1st, he was greeted in the 2nd by Liam Hicks and a no-doubter for the game’s first run.

Another walk after that was erased by a caught stealing, and he then struck out the side in the 3rd as a part of six in a row.

Yet another walk was issued in the 4th but led to nothing, and in the 5th another walk was thankfully picked off immediately. Especially thankful because Esteury Ruiz then followed with a homer for the Marlins’ second run. Another walk followed that in the inning before he was able to get through it.

In the 6th, Glasnow was greeted with a single, steal, and groundout that advanced the runner to third. An intentional walk followed, and he was able to get a huge strikeout.

That was the end of his inconsistent but weirdly dominant outing: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 6 BB, 9 K, 92 Pitches.

The two was still up there at the end because Alex Vesia entered and got a pop-out to kill the threat.

The offense … well, things didn’t really get better.

After just an infield single in the 1st, they finally cashed in on a lead-off double from Max Muncy in the 2nd via … a pop-up lost in the sun from Alex Call.

Case in point, a lead-off Shohei Ohtani walk and steal in the 3rd didn’t move (there was another walk with two outs, I guess). They followed that by going down in order in the 4th and stranding a lead-off single in the 5th.

They actually took advantage of a chance in the 6th after a lead-off double from Kyle Tucker. A groundout got him to third, and he scored on an actually deserved single from Dalton Rushing to tie things at 2-2.

Another single followed to put a pair on with just one out, but the rally was killed there.

And that was the end of the starting pitcher matchup as well.

Will Klein pitched a pair of innings and gave up the go-ahead run on this shit.

They did get a shot in the 9th, as back-to-back walks started a rally, and then a sac bunt came.

Bunt is correct, though the context is bases loaded is actually worse in this scenario and the guy being walked is Ohtani.

They then had bases loaded in the 9th with one out after a walk to Ohtani, but Freddie Freeman hit into a double play.

WHAT A WILD DOUBLE PLAY!

Since the start of 2024, the Dodgers have the second-best offense in baseball (116 wRC+), and in that same time they are 28th with the bases loaded (78 wRC+). It’s actually worse since 2025, but 2024 gives a sample size over 300 PA. Remarkable.

======

20-11

The Dodgers now have a much-needed day off before a three-game series in St. Louis against the Cardinals. It’ll start at 2:15 PM HT/5:15 PM PT/8:15 PM ET with Emmet Sheehan on the bump against Matthew Liberatore.
