Drury released, Adams being further evaluated

The White Sox revealed additional roster news on Sunday, and it’s not particularly positive.

Infielder Brandon Drury has been released after fracturing his left thumb last week. Additionally, Chris Getz said that right-hander Mason Adams will undergo Tommy John surgery, though the team back-tracked and clarified that he’s still being further evaluated with “all options on the table.”

Adams, 25, experienced some discomfort in his throwing arm last week and was diagnosed with a right elbow flexor strain. Though he was re-assigned to minor-league camp, Adams turned in a strong spring overall and figured to see opportunities in the major league rotation.

Instead, the righty could soon find himself on a long list of other pitchers who will go under the knife this season. Teammates who have needed Tommy John so far include Blake Larson, Juan Carela, Ky Bush, Prelander Berroa, and most recently Drew Thorpe. Though no team has avoided arm injuries during camp, the White Sox certainly have seen their fair share.

As for Drury, the 32-year-old joined the Sox on a minor league deal last month before camp. With over 10 MLB seasons with the Diamondbacks, Yankees, Blue Jays, Mets, Reds, Padres, and most recently the Angels, Drury has compiled a career slash line of .245/.296/.421.

The infielder got off to an impressive start this spring, slashing .410/.439/.821 with three home runs and positioning himself as the likely starting second baseman on Opening Day. The unfortunate news of the fracture will now have him searching for another opportunity when he returns to full health.

Elsewhere, Mike Tauchman and Josh Rojas appear likely to start the season on the IL. Tauchman is currently battling a hamstring injury, while Rojas suffered a hairline toe fracture and figures to miss some time.

As we continue to learn more about the roster construction ahead of Opening Day, we’ll provide further updates.
