Built Like the ’90s: The A’ja Wilson’s Nike A’Two Rewrites The Signature Sequel

Second signature shoes usually refine what worked the first time. They sharpen lines, tweak proportions and follow a predictable evolutionary arc. The Nike A’Two does something else. Rather than visually building upon the mesh-driven minimalism of the Nike A’One, the next model pivots decisively into a design language rooted in 1990s basketball.

The shift is immediate; molded synthetic leather replaces mesh, sculpted ridges define the forefoot, the collar appears slightly taller. The build feels denser, more structured, more physical. It’s a silhouette with presence.

“If you’re a hooper — especially if you’re a ’90s kid — you’ll catch it,” says lead designer London Johnson. The influence resonates with Wilson herself. “The ’90s are very nostalgic to A’ja. It’s something she grounds herself in.”

“It’s bigger, bolder and even more me. I poured my whole heart into the shoe and the collection…”

A’ja on her next signature shoe

The reference point is deliberate. In the 1990s, performance basketball footwear was defined by leather builds. Shoes carried weight, both visually and physically. That era also marked a formative chapter for women’s basketball footwear when WNBA icons like Cheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper, and Dawn Staley each had footwear that reflected performance authority and cultural stature. The A’Two’s synthetic leather upper and forefoot ridges read as a modern interpretation of that language.

The timing amplifies the message. Wilson enters this second chapter following a historic 2025 campaign, becoming the first player to win a Championship, Finals MVP, league MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and scoring title in a single season. It’s a dream season likely to never be duplicated at any level. If the A’One announced her arrival, the A’Two reinforces command.

“If you’re a hooper — especially if you’re a ’90s kid — you’ll catch it…The ’90s are very nostalgic to A’ja.”

A’Two lead designer London Johnson on the 90’s aesthetic

Johnson describes the sequel as a “graduation” from the first rather than an evolution. Containment became the obsession for the A’Two; the molded upper functions almost like a shell, locking the foot in place whether attacking downhill or anchoring defensively. A reinforced external heel counter stabilizes hard plants and pivots, while the new mid-foot shank maintains torsional control and energy flow. It’s simply built better.

There are connective threads to Wilson’s original narrative. The pearl-inspired molding remains embedded in the upper, and her embroidered star motif expands across the vamp and tongue. In the launch A’Pink colorway, iridescent finishes flash across the Swoosh, shank and heel clip, balancing performance hardware with expressive detail.

“I want kids to feel confident, bold and proud when they lace up — like the star of their own show.”

A’ja on young hoopers wearing the A’Two

But the defining identity of the A’Two is structural. It channels an era when basketball footwear was built to be seen and felt. When leather dominated the hardwood. When women’s stars commanded signature platforms that matched their authority. “The A’Two is a level up,” Wilson says. “It’s bigger, bolder and even more me.”

Underfoot, the platform scales up. Cushlon 3.0 returns for springy takeoffs and soft landings, while a forefoot Zoom Air unit sharpens responsiveness to deliver the explosive precision Wilson’s game demands. A high-grip traction pattern completes the performance package.

The MSRP rises $30 from the first model — uncommon between signature installments. Here, it reads less as inflation and more as assertion: more structure, more technology, more statement.

The Nike A’Two and A’ja Wilson’s second signature apparel collection release globally May 2 via nike.com and select retailers — marking not just a sequel, but a recalibration of what a second chapter can be.
