Jayson Tatum has officially been ruled out for the Boston Celtics’ Game 7 clash against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, according to Shams Charania.
This development is a major setback for Boston, especially after the team had built a 3-1 series advantage before dropping two consecutive games, allowing Philadelphia to force a decisive Game 7.
Tatum had earlier been listed as questionable because of knee stiffness, an issue that surfaced after he missed the final 16 minutes of the Game 6 defeat.
He had previously indicated the discomfort was in the opposite leg from the one where he suffered an Achilles tear and downplayed the concern, but the team ultimately chose a more cautious approach.
“He just came in today with knee discomfort,” head coach Joe Mazzulla said, per Brian Robb. “The medical team and myself decided for him not to play.”
Across six games in the series, Tatum has been producing 23.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.8 assists while shooting .475 from the field, .365 from three, and .781 from the free-throw line.
Although the Celtics have managed to win games without their star forward during the season, they’ll now need to rely heavily on that experience in this high-stakes matchup.
