Kobe Bryant and LeBron James have always been compared to each other throughout their careers. Former NBA All-Star Mark Jackson has a preference, and that is Bryant due to his elite mentality.

Over the years, people have had debates between LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. It is a fantastic conversation because both players are all-time greats who were the league’s best players for a long time.

They have different characteristics that make them great. Most people would say that Bryant’s best trait was his mentality and everlasting work ethic. On the other hand, James has all the physical gifts any athlete would love to have, and he paired that with an elite basketball IQ.

The two superstars got along well with each other, as Bryant even shielded James from critics. Former All-Star guard and coach Mark Jackson was asked whether he prefers Bryant or James.

Jackson prefers Bryant’s elite mentality

During his career, Bryant showcased how much an elite mentality can propel a player to success. Bryant was always an unwavering figure, as he always worked hard and stood by his principles. That helped him become the league’s best player, which led to five championships.

While James is arguably the smartest player of the modern generation, the elite mentality draws people in. The Mamba Mentality is popular for a reason, and that is because Bryant showcased it every time he could.

“That’s a closer one. I’ll tell you, I’m taking Kobe’s mentality.

“The reason why is because I would be successful in life, period, whether in basketball or somewhere else, I’ll be good,” Jackson said to Shannon Sharpe.

As a coach and former All-Star who played against Bryant, Jackson appreciates the effect of that mentality. Considering Jackson was also one of the league’s smartest players, he is comfortable choosing not to pick James’ IQ. However, that does not mean that James’ intelligence is not a big part of his game and success.

Intangibles matter for the best of the best

Talent and skill are always a big part of players’ success. However, certain intangibles come naturally to a select few players, like Bryant’s unshakable mentality and James’ IQ. Those are traits that are unique to them, which made them all-time greats.

The modern era has plenty of players who are gifted with some intangibles, like Kevin Durant’s confidence on offense, Kyrie Irving’s flair, and many more. However, an elite mentality and high basketball IQ are tough to replicate.

Kobe on the Mamba Mentality 🎯

“You wake up every single day to get better today than you were yesterday. It doesn’t matter what you are: whether you’re a basketball player, hockey player, golfer, painter, or writer…You try to reach your full potential… that’s the quest.” pic.twitter.com/oFpe1dxfvV

Jackson chose Bryant because he is rarer than players with a high basketball IQ. Some people could argue that Chris Paul is on the same level as James, possibly on a higher level. In terms of mentality, Bryant is almost unbeatable. Michael Jordan might be the only player who could compete, and he was Bryant’s idol.
