Former New York Knicks star wins championship and Finals MVP one year after NBA exit, sends message to fans

One former New York Knicks star just accomplished a career goal outside the NBA, and explained to fans what it means to him.

Life outside of the NBA can be very difficult for players. With how competitive the league is, only the best players in the world get the chance to play.

Each year, players will enter and leave the NBA based on their performances and ability to adapt to the league’s constant evolution.

But that doesn’t mean players can’t find success outside the league. Several NBA players take lucrative deals to play in Europe when opportunities in America start to fade.

That is exactly what former New York Knicks star Danilo Gallinari did. And it paid off big time, as he was able to check off a massive goal on his list.

Danilo Gallinari wins BSN championship and Finals MVP in Puerto Rico

Now 37 years old, Danilo Gallinari is playing basketball in Puerto Rico. He represents the Vaqueros de Bayamon, a team in the BSN league.

Gallinari led his side to the BSN championship, earning Finals MVP honors in the process. After the win, Gallinari took to X to explain what this win means to him.

“These are the nights that make me love this game. The reason why, year after year, I keep fighting. Why I always get back up, even when things get tough.

“Thanks to a special group. And to all of you, who supported us every step of the way.”

During the BSN Finals, Gallinari averaged 22.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. He has come a long way since his early days on the Knicks.

New York Knicks didn’t give Gallinari much of a chance

While Danilo Gallinari was a top draft pick for the New York Knicks, he didn’t get much of a chance with the side.

The #6 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft played just three years with the team. Eventually, they traded him to the Denver Nuggets as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade.

Gallinari was never an All-Star in the NBA, but he did put up strong role-player numbers. As a career 14.9 points per game scorer, the Knicks could have nurtured the Italian forward a lot more.

Of course, Gallinari joined the Knicks during a period where the team was poorly managed. The Knicks were one of the worst NBA teams in the 2000s.

Hopefully, fumbles like Gallinari are behind the Knicks now, as they look to cement themselves as NBA champions next season.
